Wings for Life Grant for Sarah Brüningk,
May 2024
The grant "A Novel Quantification of Spinal Cord Injury Recovery" was accepted for funding.
Sarah Brüningk is the principal investigator and Prof. Dr. Catherine Jutzeler the co-investigator.
Sarah is interested in exploring the potential of in silico (i.e. computer-simulated) trials to predict recovery in spinal cord injuries (hashtag#SCI). This interest stems from her previous research into using computer simulations for predicting tumor progression in recurrent high-grade glioma. What ties these studies together is Sarah's expertise in using digital health solutions for rare diseases, where she applies data-driven approaches and mechanistic modelling.
This research is generously supported by the Wings for Life Research Foundation.

Young Investigator Grant for Lakmal Meegahapola
May 2024
Lakmal, a postdoctoral researcher from our lab, received the Young Investigator Grant (80.000 CHF) from the Novartis Foundation for Medical-Biological Research to develop responsible AI models for multimodal data in intensive care unit environments.
The Novartis Foundation for Medical-Biological Research funds young researchers at the beginning of their careers by supporting their early stages of independence or by co-funding research fellowships abroad (e.g, postdocs).
We celebrate with Lakmal this great achievement and wish him great success in his projects.
Olga Mayenfisch Foundation Grant for Sarah Brüningk
March 2024
Our Lead of Paediatric Oncology Applications Sarah Brüningk was awarded a grant from the external page Olga Mayenfisch Foundation to research the use of generative diffusion models for personalised predictions of radiotherapy response in children with rare brain tumors (diffuse midline glioma).
We congratulate Sarah for this great achievement and wish her lots of fun and good success in her research activities.

Third Prize for Best Oral presentation at the Prestigious ASIA 2024 Conference for Louis Lukas.
June 2024
Louis presented groundbreaking work on "Graph Representations of Neurological Test Results as a Novel Approach for Recovery Prediction after Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)". This research showcases innovative use of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) to predict recovery outcomes for patients with SCI.

Special Recognition for Sustainable Practices for Lakmal Meegahapola and Colleagues.
May 2024
An honor that this award was given to two out of 1058 accepted papers at the conference.
In their paper "𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘼𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙎𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙭𝙩 𝙁𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙎𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙥𝙝𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝘿𝙖𝙩𝙖: 𝙂𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙯𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝘼𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙨 𝘾𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘿𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙮 𝙇𝙞𝙛𝙚 𝙈𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨", the winning team analyzed the social context (whether a person is alone or not) of young adults in five countries using smartphone data to determine if social context can be inferred from sensor data and how well these inferences generalize across different countries.
