Successful Focus Project Delivery

We are excited to celebrate the successful completion of our Focus Project students’ journey (Sofie Bolleter, Tamara Schneider and Linus Werren) on the topic of Assessment of domain generalisation for sepsis prediction in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) datasets.

Focus Project presentation

They have been working in our lab since September 2024, and yesterday they presented their results at the Focus Project Symposium at the Department of Health Sciences and Technology (D-HEST), ETH Zürich.

Under the guidance of our lab's lead Prof. Catherine Jutzeler our postdoc Dr. Lakmal Meegahapola, and our PhD students Hugo Madge León and Aspasia Vozi, they tackled one of the most pressing challenges in critical care: predicting sepsis, by using 3 real-world ICU patient datasets and utilizing advanced domain generalization techniques.

Throughout this project, our students have grown tremendously, developing not only technical expertise but also a deep understanding for the complexities of translating AI models into clinical practice. Their work contributes to the ongoing effort to create more generalizable and trustworthy tools for early sepsis detection, which can ultimately improve patient outcomes worldwide.

Congratulations to our students for their dedication, growth, and impactful research! We are proud of your achievements and look forward to seeing where your talents will take you next. A big thank you to Dr. Cecilia Nicoletti and Department of Health Sciences and Technology (D-HEST) for the successful organization and support!

Applications are now open for our Focus Project next year: “Building an AI-assistant for pediatric sepsis”. The successful team will consist of 3 D-HEST bachelor students. We are looking forward to receiving your applications!
